Blurb: Will a centuries-old broken heart ruin the promise of new love?
Dominic Ashworth is descended from a long line of witches, although the family practice of witchcraft died out generations ago. Forever connected to a dark history, the house he grew up in remained in the Ashworth family for generations until his estranged father sold it.
On a mission to check out the new owners, Dominic runs into Caleb Jones and gives the gorgeous man his phone number—but getting a date should be the last thing on Dominic’s agenda.
Caleb and his best friend, Zach Briceworth, are oblivious to the heartache and magic tied to the foundations of their new home. When strange things start to happen, the truth emerges and surprises them both, especially as everything revolves around Caleb’s new love interest.
After a shaky start, Caleb and Dominic settle into an easy relationship, falling faster than either of them expected. But with Halloween approaching, the possibility of danger increases. The past is not always as it seems, and the ripples of a tragic event threaten to put an end to everything between them.
Review: Dominic comes from a long line of witches. Somewhere back in his family tree something bad happened in the home he grew up in. It’s stressed that every descendant from his family must wear the protection tattoo to keep evil at bay. After his mother’s death their family is strained. His father sells the house. Part of the deal was that it has to stay in their family. Dominic isn’t happy his father goes against their wishes to sell it but still feels obligated to make sure his relative who was banished won’t come back and kill again. He sets out to spy on the new owners. Which is where he meets Zach and Caleb. Caleb and Dominic are instantly attracted to each other. This gives Dominic the in he needs to make sure everything is properly protected. Weird things start to happen and the guys find a journal nobody knew existed. Revealing ugly details to the pieces of the story Dominic has been told. And opening up a world Caleb never knew existed.
This was a good spooky read just in time for Halloween. There’s a creepy tone to the entire book. Like you’re just waiting for something to happen. I enjoyed the anticipation. It’s pretty obvious what’s going to happen which is fine. The suspense and strange happenings are what draws you in and keeps you turning the pages. The characters were somewhat frustrating in that they ignored or shook off way too many signs. Caleb never really feels like the spirit is hostile. He also doesn’t know the back story. There’s some conflict here between the guys because Dominic is keeping secrets about why these things are happening. Through the journal the guys learn the sad and horrific fate of Dominic’s ancestor. I did like how there was some closure. Caleb and Dominic have some good chemistry and playful banter. This helped keep the book light. I was a little disappointed there wasn’t actually much witchcraft in the book but I can see how over the centuries people might not pass on those things as they once did. I enjoyed this book. If you’re in the mood for a spooky ghost story I’d say give this one a try.
