Blurb: His family’s gym has produced a roster of mixed martial arts legends, but so far Kieran Kavanagh hasn’t followed in their footsteps. After a brawl lands him in jail, Kieran is assigned to work at a center for at-risk youth. Though given a second chance, Kieran’s simply going through the motions—until he meets one very special kid, Shea Doherty, and falls hard for her very beautiful, very grown-up big sister, Fiona. The trouble is, Kieran’s best opening moves are getting him nowhere fast.
Fiona Doherty has too many responsibilities to fool around, especially now that she has custody of Shea. Sure, she’d love to find a devoted partner. But she won’t jeopardize her sister’s happiness—or risk revealing her tortured past—on a love-’em-and-leave-’em type of guy like Kieran . . . so it’s up to him to prove her wrong. As Fiona spends more time with Kieran, she starts to see a softer side of the reckless warrior. Now she must admit that when it comes to the possibility of real love, well . . . there’s a fighting chance.
Review: Sometimes when characters meet in a book, just like in real life they fall in lust/love. In this moving, sexy and complex novel by Sarah Robinson, both Fiona and Kieran know that the person they saw is going to be in their life…but it just seems like maybe a one night stand kind of thing at first.
But they both step back before committing to that one night because both seem to think…I’d want more with this one.
And so the story arc goes, with both of them continuing to run into each other. Kieran’s really attracted to his “flower girl,” and Fiona is enchanted when not only Kieran but his entire family seem to adopt her and her special needs sister. What started out as a coincidence starts becoming actual dates and purposeful meetings. But each is keeping a bombshell secret from the other that’s going to either draw them closer or tear the world they’re building together apart.
I loved the first novel in this series about Rory and Clare and it was so exciting to see them continue their relationship–albeit from a distance–and it just added to the pathos surrounding Kieran and Fiona. They both wanted a happily ever after, but each had convinced themselves that they weren’t going to get it. Normally these stories seem to be filled with angst and too much “Why don’t ou just TALK to each other!!!” but this one wasn’t. And the secrets were pretty touchy; something you wouldn’t tell someone after just a couple of weeks. And Ms. Robinson solved the issue pretty quickly so I’m happy to say that she’s remained in my top favorite series writer category! 🙂
I really enjoy Ms Robinson’s writing style and the world that she’s building with the Kavanagh’s and their family, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next. Will it be Kane? Casey? I can’t wait!
