Blurb: They call him the Beast—a hardened mercenary whose heart seems as cold as his icy blue gaze. They do not know his true name: Niall Braewick, son of the Laird of Kincaid. It has been years since he escaped into the forest the night his father was murdered. Now he has returned, ablaze with a vengeful hunger. He will gain the MacClaren chief’s trust, gather his clan, and take back his lands. And take the MacClaren’s daughter as well…
Though he pulled her from the river, saving her life, Elspeth has been warned to keep her distance from her father’s hired warrior. He is a barbarian—a shame, as he is far more compelling than the lechers and fools competing for her dowry. Little does she know that, like the castle itself, she is a prize Niall intends to claim…but will he extract blood for blood and possess what is his, or will his enemy’s beautiful, innocent daughter tempt him to forsake his dream of conquest?
Review: What an interesting setup for a series! I’m very excited about the premise and the next book as well. Lily Blackwood made this novel not only sexy and entertaining but got me caught up in the story about the three Clan Kincaid sons who (hopefully?) survived the attack on their clan.
Elspeth MacClaren, sure that her father is going to let her marry for love, is prepared to meet her suitors…until she realizes that her father’s letting her stepmother Bridget choose the finalists. Considering that Elspeth had just told her father about a suspicious passionate embrace between Bridget and her bodyguard Duncan–and that Bridget’s a very mean-spirited and jealous woman–she’s pretty sure that the remaining suitors are going to be horrid. She’s not disappointed–they are! Two old men who are smelly and hideous. How can she get out of this without harming the reputation of the clan?
Niall had traveled far and wide on his quest to prepare for vengeance against the clans that had destroyed his childhood and taken his parents away from him. Armed with a hundred men who had sworn to follow him, he has a devious plan to invade and conquer the castle. It all rests on getting the Chief of the MacClaren’s to trust him–and for no one to recognize him until it’s too late. Will he succeed? And will his attraction to the Chief’s daughter sway him away from his plan for revenge?
Gorgeous scenery and captivating characters fill this Scottish romance with adventure and smoldering sensuality! I’m very excited about reading further into the history of the Kincaids and finding out what happened to the rest of the clan and where the missing two brothers went. While different than some of the other historical romances that I’ve read, the plot arc grabbed my attention and I really liked the parts that were in Niall’s head as well as getting a glimpse into Elspeth’s as well. Thanks for an enticing read!
