Blurb: Former musician Juliet Langley has barely had a day off since taking over management of the coffeehouse owned by her best friend, Pete Bennett. But there’s always more to be done—such as prepping for the annual Holiday 5K Race organized by Pete’s snobby socialite girlfriend, Cecilia Hollingsworth. This year, Java Jive has a booth right at the finish line, and since Juliet and Cecilia don’t always see eye to eye, everything has to be perfect. Nothing can go wrong. Nothing . . . like Juliet stumbling over Cecilia’s dead body on the morning of the race.
When Pete is arrested for Cecilia’s murder, Juliet sets out to clear his name. She’ll do whatever it takes—even if it means standing up to the police, her ex-boyfriend, and the grande dames of Nashville. But there isn’t enough espresso in the world for the greatest challenge in her path: infiltrating Nashville’s high society to uncover the hidden hotbed of scandal without running afoul of the law herself. With her last dime staked on Pete’s bail bond and her staff growing jittery, the last thing Juliet needs is for her trademark temper to land her behind bars. As time drips away, Juliet needs to crack this case before the killer comes back for another shot.
Review: Caroline Fardig is writing some of the best romantic suspense I’ve ever read. The dialogue and writing are crisp and clever, and the frequently self deprecating internal dialogue is hella funny. Even in describing a scene, she’s a genius with the words, describing a gardening lothario as summertime who “…certainly never passed up a chance to be a total douche.” The first book, Death Before Decaf, was a great setup to this sequel, and even though I think this could be read standalone, why miss the opportunity to start with the first if you can?
Juliet moved back to Nashville and started working for her best friend Pete at his coffee shop. There were a lot of memories tied up there of her college days with Pete, working at Java Jive for his dad. It was a good hidey hole for her to keep her head down and forget about her lost musical career.
But when Pete’s girlfriend Cecilia (aka Juliet’s nemesis) gets murdered and Pete’s in jail as the main suspect, Juliet turns into a one person demolition crew/private investigator, spreading mayhem and getting beaten up by her suspects. Sin after she’s got the cops on her tail in the form of her ex boyfriend, Ryder, who’s insisting she leaves the detecting to the police.
Fat chance of that when it’s her buddy Pete on the line. One day she’s going to have to figure out why everyone thinks her feelings for Pete are more than just friends–especially Ryder. Right?
Great writing with funny, engaging characters and a love triangle that’s just a question mark right now but could pop at any time. I can’t wait!!! Thanks
