Blurb: In the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder…
As the captain of Field County’s ice rescue dive team, Callum Cook is driven to perfection. But when he meets new diver Louise “Lou” Sparks, all that hard-won order is obliterated in an instant. Lou is a hurricane. A walking disaster. And with her, he’s never felt more alive…even if keeping her safe may just kill him.
Lou’s new to the Rockies, intent on escaping her controlling ex, and she’s determined to make it on her own terms…no matter how tempting Callum may be. But when a routine training exercise unearths a body, Lou and Callum find themselves thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a killer who will stop at nothing to silence Lou-and prove that not even her new Search and Rescue family can keep her safe forever.
Review: Katie Ruggle, you amaze me! What a perfectly clever plot, with smoking hot characters and an arresting environment that begs to be the scene of the crime. I don’t think there’s anything scarier than being trapped in a frozen lake!!
Louise–just don’t call her that–Sparks has escaped the smothering life she left behind in Connecticut and is embracing her independence in the snowy tundra of Colorado. She loves being off the grid in her little solar-powered cabin. Bring a waitress at the local greasy spoon isn’t her life’s ambition, but she loves participating on the Fields County Search and Rescue dive team. She’s done pretty well at the training–even if she’s used to diving in warmer waters. But no one’s ever trained her to expect to kick a body in a frozen lake!
She’s got the hots for her dive team captain, Callum, but she thinks he isn’t impressed with her. He’s so somber and never smiles while she’s the group cut-up. If only he’d smile at her instead of constantly chewing her out.
Sometimes it’s better not get what you asked for, because as soon as she realizes that Callum might like her back, weird things start happening to her. Bad weird. Like knives cutting her tires and more. As she, Callum and the police try to figure out if the things that are happening to her are at all related to the dead body in the frozen reservoir, the situation escalates. Is having Callum by her side helpful or more of a risk? For someone who’s struggled to do things for herself, it’s hard to let someone else help. And as her feelings for him grow, now she’s got him to worry about too.
Great story that I just loved reading. Be aware that the story ends with a cliffhanger–not about the relationship (which gets its HEA) but about some of the unsolved things that have been happening. Can’t wait for the next!
