Blurb: When Emily Wayborn goes home to visit her mom while on hiatus from her hit TV show, she receives a voicemail from her former best friend, Amber. Though the two were once notorious party girls, they haven’t spoken in years. Although the message might sound benign to anyone else, Amber uses a safe word that Emily recognizes, a word they always used to get out of sticky situations during their wild days. And what’s more chilling than the voicemail: it turns out that Amber has gone missing.
Determined to track down her friend, Emily follows a chain of clues that lead her to the enigmatic billionaire Reeve Sallis, a hotelier known for his shady dealings and play boy reputation. Now, in order to find Amber, Emily must seduce Reeve to learn his secrets and discover the whereabouts of her friend. But as she finds herself more entangled with him, she finds she’s drawn to Reeve for more than just his connection to Amber, despite her growing fear that he may be the enemy. When she’s forced to choose where her loyalty lies, how will she decide between saving Amber and saving her heart?

Review: Wow. This story reminded me a lot of several I’ve read lately., with the addictive love of a dominant, controlling man that veers over the line past kinky: the unmentionable wants, the burning need, the voyeuristic pain. The main character’s story of trying to find out what happened to her best friend/mentor turned frenemy takes you right into uncharted territory and then leaves you there, hanging. I hate cliff hangers!!!!!!!! Argh!!!!

Even though Emily had broken ties with her best friend Amber seven years before, just hearing her voice on the answering machine saying their safe word blue raincoat takes her right back to the past. She starts an investigation into Amber’s past that leads her directly to an incredibly dangerous man…for her. Emily’s attraction to Reeve starts to distract her from her goal of figuring out if he’s the one responsible for Amber’s disappearance; before long, her feelings for him start to make her question her loyalty.

Is she still there for Amber? Or is she there because there’s a chance at a real relationship with Reeve?

She wants to trust him but with every secret he reveals, she becomes more concerned. Does she want to know the truth bad enough to continue her investigation, or can she trust him enough to stop wondering about Amber and fully involve herself into their relationship?  Before she can find out, a surprise ending makes everything she’d thought before obsolete…

This is one of those stories that sucks you in and before you know it, you’re at the end screaming about the cliff hanger. They’re addictive and almost hypnotizing to the right reader–namely me! Unfortunately, by the time the next one comes out I’ll have forgotten the allure of this one and will have to either read it again or else just hope I can pick up enough clues from the next that I don’t have to. That’s the problem with these cliffhangers for me–senior + mommy brain. Bet they don’t plan that into their logistics! But if you are smarter and better at remembering than I am and enjoy these fatalistic romances, this one is better than most with a lot of great sexy scenes and an intriguing mystery that begs to be solved. I’m hoping the next in the series doesn’t let me down. Thanks!
