Blurb:  North Pole City Tales: Book Four

From North Pole City to Winter Wonderland, preparations are underway after a royal announcement sweeps everyone into a frenzy of festivity. At the heart of the celebration are the city’s most beloved elf pilots, the Rein Dears. Once the Big Flight is behind them, the pilots prepare for the royal event. Assigned a special task of finding an Elska rose, Cupid and Blitzen are unaware of how their friendship is about to change forever.

Yet not all that glitters is gold. The sweet, angelic Cupid hides a dark secret, one that threatens to destroy his Rein Dear status, his friends, and the elf who’s captured his heart. It’s up to Blitzen to help Cupid see the light in the darkness and show him that together they can mend broken hearts.

Review:  Cupid and Blitzen are best friends. When they begin to feel more romantic towards each other as opposed to friendly both elves get a little upset. Neither wants to lose their best friend. When their friend Rudy asks Cupid for a favor there is no question that Blitzen will go with him. Because of his winter faery heritage Rudy knows Cupid will be able to find an Elska rose easier than any other elf. They’ve got a natural affinity with winter plants. Cupid has just neglected to mention he’s only half winter faery. One of Cupid’s brothers decides he’s going to force Cupid’s truths into the light. Not long after Cupid and Blitzen’s relationship changes, Blitzen meets his potential in-laws. It goes bad. It goes bad for multiple couples. Cupid’s brother is a real… piece of work.

I love the world in which these stories are set. My brain keeps wanting to describe the world building as cute, but it’s so much more than that. It’s childhood fantasies and the magic of Christmas as a supporting character and backdrop to the romantic tales of heroic elves making sure Christmas happens as it should as they also save their magical realm from evil. And the stories are just darn cute! There are so many little details: the constant consumption of sweets, the smells, the building materials of the villages, and the curse words to name a few.

Jack Frost is a bit of a hot head where Rudy is even tempered and calming. I love these bits of irony in the characters in this series. Cupid, despite outward appearances and his general behavior, is pretty dark. Cupid could wreak some havoc if he chose to. Blitzen is the tender big guy. And the King of Frost, who lives in the public eye, finally has someone really notice him and is not amused. Cupid’s good deeds in the story affected everyone. Despite his parentage Cupid made his choice to do good in the world and does so.

I’m not a huge reader of holiday stories, but when I do read them I want a sweet tale. This series fits the bill.
