Blurb: When Jace Carver snags a minor part in his buddy’s zombie flick, he suddenly starts getting noticed all over the place. Even Hollywood megastar Carletta Ocean—known for her extensive “research” with her male co-stars—wants Jace for her new rom-com. The role could be a game-changer . . . ifJace nails the audition.
As Jace’s agent, Shaylene Kwak is all business, and isn’t about to let her favorite client blow this opportunity. Since their college years, Shay has been immune to Jace’s charm and rock-hard body. But long hours in close company have a way of wearing down even the best defenses, and when their platonic teasing turns into serious flirting, Jace and Shay are no longer able to resist what’s been right in front of them the entire time.
Shay knows Jace’s love-’em-and-leave-’em history with women. She’s not about to be just another notch in his belt. And it’s true, Jace has never wanted more than a one-night stand—until now. But at the end of the line, he’s got a choice: sleep with Carletta and seal the deal, or risk his career for a shot at true love with Shay.
Review: What a cute and sweet little story! The main character, actor Jace Carver, narrates in an almost stream of consciousness, first-person voice, telling his life story and giving us his basic M.O. in life. He intends to be the Barney Stinson of life, ala How I Met Your Mother. His character gets to always have fun, sleep with lots of women and never make a commitment. But everyone still loves Barney–he never looks like a jerk–and this is what Jace aspires to. He only wants to be with women who know he’s a Barney, though, because he doesn’t want to hurt anyone again.
Jace had two strikes against him growing up; he was being raised by his Grandma, and his dyslexia had made school difficult for him. Trying to fit in was hard–but not for the characters on his favorite shows. Solution–act like them! Career problem solved. He was going to be an actor. When he’d moved to New York City to go to college, he’d run into his agent, Shay–and continued running into her until they’d formed an unlikely team trying to get him his current audition in a Carletta Ocean movie. It would be the big break he needed to seal his status as a major movie star.
It takes a little while to catch on to his patter, but after you do, you realize this is a sweet guy who’s really got a soft heart. I’d love to see it smoothed out a little because the gist of its really wonderful and has a great message of substance over shine. While they’re traveling to Alabama to get Jace to his audition, a series of misadventures open both their eyes to the possibilities that exist beyond friendship.
Shay had always had trouble being accepted by her family. She was trying really had at being an agent and Jace was her biggest hope. If she could get him this amazing gig, her star would be set. But why does the thought of him hooking up with Carletta make her feel so icky?
Funny and silly with lots of fast banter to boot, this is one short but sassy read of friends to lovers that will melt your heart. Thanks!
