Review: In Shay Savage’s new apocalyptic novel, Hannah Savinski arrives in Atlanta to change planes on her way to Washington, DC. to testify against one of the most powerful men in America. Her bodyguard detail hands her off to a new group headed by Falk Eckhart as soon as they arrive. While waiting in downtown Atlanta for their next flight, all hell breaks loose. After a series of explosions levels buildings all around them, Falk leads Hannah into the subway system, trying to protect her from falling debris and the chaos breaking out all around them. When they emerge, the world has changed. Dead men are everywhere. The women are gone. The kids are gone. The dogs and cats are gone. Just…gone. And no one knows where the attack came from or if it’s over.
That all happens very early in the book. What happens next, as a world collapses around them, is one of the best explorations of an apocalyptic world I have read to date. Falk is a former soldier and a kick butt bodyguard. He takes his assignment to protect Hannah seriously, somewhat to her dismay. Hannah doesn’t understand, at first, that our world has reverted to it’s primitive past, where the strong survive and the weak are pawns…a world with very few resources and very few women, and women are the greatest prize of all.
Falk, the hot guy with the cool name, is fantastic. One of my new book boyfriends! He’s a warrior. A new age caveman. With guns and skills. He’s the kind of man that just might be able to keep a very rare and beautiful woman safe in a world gone crazy. But his protectiveness nearly drives Hannah nuts! He watches where she goes, he questions who she talks to, he wants her close all the time. She thinks he’s smothering her to death. And still, the sexual attraction is burning hot. Hannah has issues. Falk understands. It’s a slow burn. I have to stop. I could talk about Falk and Hannah and the world they have inherited for hours. So, I’ll just talk about the author instead.
Shay Savage is one of the most creative fiction writers in the world…at least in my experience. She’s a quirky, talented and accomplished writer with extraordinary insight into the human psyche. She’s just down right entertaining. And ruthless. Ruthless to me! She keeps me on edge, wondering where she’s going with a story. And I know…I KNOW that she won’t let me down, but she scares me nearly to death sometimes. Not in a horror story way…in a…how will they get out of this horrible situation way. If you are a fan of Shay Savage, you will love this book. If you’re a new reader and my review has interested you, this is a great place to start. Commodity is a stand alone novel, and I think almost everyone will love it. Keep in mind that it is apocalyptic. This genre is usually brutal. There are few women, so you have to understand that there will be some uncomfortable scenes. With that said, go buy this book and…
