Blurb: Former Navy SEAL turned marine rescue firefighter Brad Silverman is tasked with his toughest mission yet: taking care of his best friend’s wife. The only problem is that Scarlett Harrison has always been the one-the one who got away, the one who held his heart, and the one who has always been off limits…
Now widowed Scarlett returns to her childhood home in St. Louis, determined to get her life back on track. She misses her husband but can’t fight the attraction she feels for sexy fireman Brad. As she spends more time with him, the connection they have had since high school grows stronger. Are they finally ready to overcome their pasts and lose their hearts to each other?
Review: It’s always a little disconcerting to read a story about a widow getting together with one of her husband’s friends–or in this case, his BEST friend. But Michelle Dunaway handled it well and I truly enjoyed this story about second chances and a true love that developed over time for Scarlett and Brad. I think everyone else will enjoy it, too!
Scarlett, Brad and her husband Todd had all been friends in high school. Todd had been the first to announce his interest in Scarlett, even though Brad had also been very interested in her and she in him. He’d snuck in a kiss with her before Todd had asked her out, and she’d always remembered it and wondered about what could have happened between them–but she’d married Todd and that was that. After Todd’s death and two years of mourning, she decides to move with her daughter back to St. Louis and their childhood home and Brad offers the home he’s been refurbishing as a place for them to stay until they can get on their feet. It’s unusual, but since she’s always been friends with him, she takes him up on the offer. When they arrive there, she’s blasted by her attraction to him–again. What had always been unspoken between them, because of Todd, is now back again, in full force. Are they going to do something about it now?
Brad feels really uncomfortable about his attraction to Scarlett, but with Todd’s letters burning a hole in his pocket, he feels like he’s almost got permission. Long ago he’d stepped aside when Todd had made his feelings about Scarlett known. He’d done the right thing and let his friend get what he wanted–but it hadn’t been the right thing for him. Now was his chance to get what HE wanted–Scarlett. But was it what SHE wanted?
As their friendship develops again, are Scarlett and Brad going to let their guilt over Todd’s death hinder what could be? And when Scarlett realizes that Todd’s left a letter for her that Brad’s been holding back, will she think he’s in it only because Todd asked him to take care of her?
Read the book and find out!
I really enjoyed how well Ms. Dunaway handled the confusing grief and conflicting emotions of what could have been really strange and uncomfortable emotions. I would have like a better handling of the sexual situation–seemed a little dreamy and euphemistic. However, the plot was very interesting and the character’s development was spot on. Well done and emotionally satisfying read! Thanks!
