Blurb: Illegitimate yet thoroughly irresistible, the Renegade Royals are leaving behind their careers as daring spies for the greatest adventure of all…
At sixteen, Alasdair Gilbride, heir to a Scottish earldom, fled the Highlands and an arranged betrothal. Ten years later, Alasdair must travel home to face his responsibilities. It’s a task that would be much easier without the distracting presence of the most enticing woman he’s ever met…
After one escapade too many, Eden Whitney has been snubbed by the ton. The solution: rusticating in the Scottish wilderness, miles from all temptation. Except, of course, for brawny, charming Alasdair. The man is so exasperating she’d likely kill him before they reach the border—if someone else weren’t trying to do just that. Now Eden and Alasdair are plunging into a scandalous affair with his life and her reputation at stake—and their hearts already irreparably lost…
Review: You know, Diana Gabaldon has kind of ruined it for the other Highlanders, hasn’t she? With Jamie Fraser on the television, it’s kind of hard to concentrate on any others. Or has she really done us all a HUGE favor by pointing out the sex appeal of men in kilts? I definitely think the latter! This cute whirl of a Scottish historical contains not only a ruined lady, hints of sexual misconduct, intrigue and death threats, but also a handsome ex-spy who’s currently in line to become a Scottish Earl (who incidentally may actually be a Royal-born bastard) trying to persuade not only one but TWO ladies about marriage. He’s got to convince his childhood betrothed to break their engagement and then persuade our erstwhile heroine Eden TO marry him–if he indeed becomes available. Sounds like a job for Prince Charming, right?
Eden Whitney’s bored during her latest Season. Since her sister’s marriage last year, it just hasn’t been the same! One night she experiments with kissing a known rake and they are found. If only the kisses had been worth it! Yuck. So she’s been sent far away so that the fuss can fade and hopefully she can return to society at some point in the future, untarnished. Unfortunately, the place her mother has picked for her to hide is Scotland, with a man she’s not very fond of–Alasdair Gilbride. The pair of them have struck sparks off each other since they first met. There’s a reason for that–chemistry–and they’ve got it in spades.
The resulting tale was deliciously twisty with many a surprise. It was hard to see how Alec was going to be able to get Donella to break the engagement, and it was becoming impossible for Edie to continue their relationship if they weren’t meant to be. She was becoming much too attached. And is Edie crazy, or was there really a dark figure on the ledge that pushed the rocks onto her and Alec? WTF?
I really enjoyed the character development and the burgeoning romance between the two MCs, and let’s not leave out the sarcastic banter. These two each gave as good as they got, though neither ever devolved into mean spiritedness, which was much appreciated. This is the fourth in the series but the first I’ve read; however, I was able to jump right in with little problem. The gorgeous scenery, tight suspense and complicated plot twists heated up the already taut sexual tension between the characters, making for an exciting and entertaining read. Thanks!
