Blurb: #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire…
Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile case. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.
Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run or surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.
Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.
Review: If you’re a fan of Ilona Andrews then this will not disappoint. The writing is smooth, the characters are fall-in-lovable and the world building is stellar. If you’re new to this dynamic writing duo, then this is a great place to start.
Here magic is normal – this is this world, there’s social media and the kids are being told not to post sensitive information on facebook. However the houses, or very strong magical families, breed like prime Crufts winners. Only they’re after actual ‘primes’ the strongest magical users and they are that world’s rich, shiny and spoilt celebrities.
Nevada herself is an unusual for this genre. She has the love of her extended family who rely on her to bring home the bacon, but she doesn’t have much in the way of physical protection – she’s not tough like Kate (Kate Daniels from Ilona Andrews’ massive Magic series) and she doesn’t have the kind of magic that can get her out of a jam and at one point she sits down and cries. And I can totally relate to that! She was a refreshing change from the troops of kick-ass girls we’ve been reading for years.
I’m just going to touch lightly on the festering love interest, Mad Rogan. He’s too hot to handle and as a mother I’d want to shake some sense into Nevada, but I don’t need to, she’s unusually balanced about him. Yes, the physical attraction is off the scale – yet she doesn’t go ga-ga. As much as he and his gargantuan ego (yes ego…what did you think I was going to say?) would like her to drop her knickers on sight, she managed to just about maintain them – if not all of her dignity. Obviously they’re going to get together, they were combustible, however I’m hoping there might be a slow burn. Anyway I still haven’t forgiven him for a thing or two, *cough kidnapping cough-cough threatening her family cough* but I’m sure Ilona Andrews will find a way to win me over.
