Blurb:  His Secrets Can Destroy Her

From the moment Josie laid eyes on sexy, mysterious Shane Dean, she was in love. Their desire ignited a passionate affair, and within weeks, Shane had slipped a ring on her finger. It seemed her every fantasy was coming true . . . until her new husband disappeared without a trace. Now, two years and one broken heart later, Josie is shocked by the hospital calls: Shane has been found . . . at a crime scene with no memory of how he got there.

Her Love Can Save Him

Shane can’t remember the blue-eyed angel at his bedside—or who he even is—but he knows something isn’t right. His hearing is razor sharp, his physical strength incredible, and the urge to protect Josie overwhelming. For powerful enemies are hunting him, and Josie is the key to discovering why. As Shane struggles to unravel his past, dangerous new truths come to light. Can he protect the only woman he’s ever loved? And can Josie trust a man she thought she knew—one who carries such a deadly secret?

Review: I first read this book about a year ago. I had every intention of keeping up with this series because I was fascinated with the characters, loved the plot line and enjoyed Ms. Zanetti’s writing. I got distracted and didn’t think about it again until a friend reminded me about this story. So, I thought I would give it a quick skim and move on to the next book in the series. Instead, I got so tied up in the story that I read and enjoyed every page. Again.

The blurb does a good job of setting the stage for the story of Shane and Josie. What it doesn’t do is tell you what it was like for a boy to be raised as a genetically engineered experiment. Or what it was like to be trained from earliest childhood to be a soldier, a soldier who was expected to kill on command. Shane killed for the first time when he was ten years old. When he was commanded to kill, he had no choice but to obey. Refusal meant his own death or worse.

Shane had only one thing that gave him hope and any sense of family, his brothers. Shane has three brothers, Matt, Nathan and Jory. They had no parents, no last names and no family but each other; they were referred to by the staff at the compound where they were raised as the Greys because of their grey eyes. The staff controlled all the brothers. Any refusal to obey a command would condemn one or all of the brothers to death.

Josie was raised in a series of Foster homes. In one of those homes, being hit was common. The thing she wanted most in her life was a family and a place to belong. She thought she had found that with her soldier, Shane. But Shane left her without a word of warning or a goodbye. He just didn’t come home one night and she didn’t hear from him for two years. Broken hearted, alone and trying to make a new life for herself, she is stunned when she is called to the hospital to identify an injured man with amnesia. It was Shane.

And then the real story begins. Why did Shane leave? Why did he come back? Why can’t he remember how he was injured? And why does he not remember Josie but knows with certainty that he loves her and would do anything to protect her? Can Josie ever trust Shane again after he left her alone? Was she just a dalliance for him? Was she a part of some mission he was on? What are the secrets he’s keeping from her? And who is the Jory that he calls for in his nightmares?

This book had me completely captivated. There are several series around with genetically modified, enhanced or altered humans. They are still human, with all the human frailties…..they are just a little better than normal. I love this sub genre and have read several. In my opinion, this is the best of it’s kind. Well written, smooth and exciting. Rebecca Zanetti has written some of the best fight scenes I have ever read. Have I mentioned the heat? No? Well, the pages fairly sizzle when sexy Shane and Josie hit the sheets. And the desk. And the….well, you get the picture.

I will be reading and reviewing book two in this series, Sweet Revenge, very soon. Stay tuned!
